The Gaston County “Blizzard” of 2014

February 16th, 2014

As you can see, Dr. Steve had fun in the snow making a snowman wearing his favorite t-shirt and hat!
He also loved making snow angels.
One of our Smilemakers, Melissa Saunders, also made this unique snow angel today. We are impressed with Melissa’s artistic skills!
Tell us what you did on your snow day and send us some photos. Please post them on our facebook page.
We’ll vote on the best photos that come in.
Stay warm, have fun!

Winter Olympics 2014

February 15th, 2014

We have anxiously waited four years since the last Winter Olympics for the games to finally begin this year on February 7th in Sochi, Russia. This year marks the “XXII Winter Olympic Games.”

Sports, in general, are exciting to watch, but there is something unique about the Winter Olympics that make it stand out among the rest. The bobsleds and luges bolting down the narrow ice track, snowboarders and skiers racing 85 mph down steep, snow-covered mountain slopes, ice hockey players aggressively competing on the rink, figure ice skaters performing thrilling jumps, twirls, and tricks, snowboarders executing breath-taking jumps and tricks, and last but not least, the strangely beloved sport of curling are all features that makes these games remarkable. In addition, watching the Olympics is such a great family-friendly activity that brings everyone together this time of year.

So, let’s talk about curling for a moment…we’re not talking about your hair, ladies. We’re talking about the actual sport of curling. This sport seems to receive a lot of mockery, but though unusual, it requires a lot of skill. For those of you who are not familiar with curling, it is comparable to the common poolside or beach-side sport of shuffleboard. However, curling is played on a sheet of ice instead of pavement. There is also somewhat of a twist to this sport. As the stone is sliding down the sheet of ice, teammates can “carve” a path using brooms to influence the stone to turn and slow down if they feel it is going to fast to receive a good score. Altering the ice on the stone’s path correctly takes a great deal of strategy and skill that is not always fully appreciated by spectators. Also, though perceived as an anaerobic activity, one that doesn’t take much physical exertion, “curlers” actually walk about 2.5 miles during one match, with each match lasting about 2 hours. Furthermore, unlike most of the other sports, curling is a team sport that requires effective group communication and teamwork. So, next time we watch the “curlers” do their thing, let’s take the time to show them the proper respect they deserve as athletes and competitors.

What is your favorite Olympic sport?

Take care, Hannon family, and enjoy the last 8 days of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games!

Candy Canes, Gingerbread Houses, Gum Drops, and…Cavities?

December 30th, 2013

Ho Ho Ho! We hope everyone had a very merry Christmas filled with fun, family, and joy! We know that the holidays are accompanied with many different yummy desserts and treats that we all love to eat. Now, don’t get us wrong, we want you to enjoy every single bite of those homemade peppermint brownies and gingerbread men, but we want to remind you to brush those pearly whites immediately following your indulgence. Remember, it’s important to brush your teeth regularly without braces, but having braces means that even more nooks and crannies are present in your mouth where food can stick and cause decay and cavities.

On a more uplifting note, Hannon Orthodontics wants to wish all of you a wonderful new year! Until next time!
